Participatory Art: People as the Medium.
This seminar examined notions of spectatorship, collaboration, authorship through looking at collaborative and participatory art or art which largely uses people as the central artistic medium. Through the work of Santiago Sierra, Omer Fast, Tino Sehgal, Lucy Orta as well as other artist's it dissected some of the issues presented by Claire Bishop in the introduction of Artificial Hells Participatory Art and the Politics of Spectatorship.
Within this context modes of artistic production during political and economic change can be examined and questions asked about the visuality and documentation process of this type of art and how valid that is. An exploration of participatory art as both a social activity and a symbolic act, looking at meaning as well as process in relation to our (the secondary audience) relationship and response to this type of practice.
