Podcast: Week 7 Diving into the Dialectic III (via Marx, feet first)

2013-05-21 MA Media Arts Philosophy Practice Term 1 2012/13

Lecture/Seminar: Dialectics: Clarifying the old problem between “ Objectivity” v “Subjectivity”, “Superstition v Faith’; “Sensuousness as political practice” – what Marx had to say about it (and why he claimed not to be ‘a Marxist’).

How does the ‘historical-materialist’ dialectic differ from Hegel’s idealist / speculative
dialectic? What is the difference between consciousness, ideology, interpretation, opinion
in terms of historical materialist position and speculative idealist? (Bonus question: what is
so ‘historical’ about ‘historical materialism’ and why should this matter)?

Reading:
1. K. Marx, Theses on Feuerbach (esp no. 3 and 11); The Communist Manifesto; The
18th Brumaire (selections uploaded or online).
2. GWF Hegel, The Phenomenology Lordship & Bondage]: sections 178-196.
