Research title – writing//painting; l’écriture féminine and difference in the making
My PhD research examines l’écriture féminine; a practice of writing developed by Hélène Cixous, Luce Irigaray and Julia Kristeva that problematised structures identified as ‘phallocentric’ within language. Feminist art practice engaged with elements of l’écriture féminine in the 1970s, 80s and early 90s, finding new ways of articulating feminist politics and the ‘feminine’ and challenging phallocentrism. Abstract painting practice however, was largely ignored by its intervention, being seen as bound up with Modernist abstract painting and providing limited possibilities for feminist art practice.
The research aims to examine the extent to which elements of l’écriture féminine can be used as a framework for a ‘non-phallocentric’ abstract painting practice and to explore the possibility of an alternative textual and material ‘space’ for representation by ‘non-phallocentric’ subjectivities. It moves on from l’écriture féminine as a homogenous term rooted in 1970s and 1980s philosophy to a reconsideration of particular elements of it in a contemporary context. Rather than simply transferring elements of l’écriture féminine to painting, the research examines how difference can come into being through material production. The research argues for painting as a complex spatiality made up of a spectrum of multiple and heterogenous spaces and builds on strategies proposed by l’écriture féminine such as multiplicity, performativity and ‘intermateriality’ and ‘quasacles’.
The research embraces theory and practice as interrelated and dialogic concepts resulting in the production of artworks and ‘art-writing’ which are fundamental to the production of knowledge. The final submission will take the form of a thesis and exhibition of artwork.
