Painting-poems are small paintings mostly created directly onto the pages of books. I incorporate text such as 'academic' writing including that of Roland Barthes and Hélène Cixous and also foreign text such as Hindi, Arabic and Mandarin which, to someone unfamiliar with these languages in their written forms, appear as diagrammatical mark-making or textual drawings. The painting-poems explore the material and painterly potential of l’écriture féminine where text and paint exceed themselves and spill into the margins of the page and multiple layers of text become distorted, troubling the readability of the work.
