Dora Project Study Day Wednesday 11 February 2015, Goldsmiths University of London. 2-5pm, Room 300, Richard Hoggart Building

The study day invites artists, archivists, lecturers, students and researchers to exchange ideas, debate and respond to some of the questions underpinning Dora Project.

Combining contemporary art, WW2 London and early rocket engineering, Dora Project aims to critically engage with the politics of the visualisation of memory as art practice and address issues of ethics in art and science. Dora Project contributes to the 70th anniversary of the end of WW2 and the liberation of the Nazi concentration and extermination camps. Dora Project is supported by Birmingham School of Art-BCU, Centre for Fine Art Research; Goldsmiths University of London and the Commission Dora Ellrich de la Fondation pour la mémoire de la Déportation. The project is led by Françoise Dupré in collaboration with Rebecca Snow. https://doraproject.wordpress.com/.

The study day is a collaboration between Jenny Doussan, Lecturer in Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths and Françoise Dupré, artist and senior lecturer at Birmingham School of Art-BCU, with guest speaker Gabrielle Decamous, Associate Professor, Faculty of Languages and Cultures, Kyushu University, Japan.

Dora Project continues the debate around the relationship between art and science, launched with Gabrielle Decamous’ talkReflections on Ethics in Art, Science, and Ben Pimlott Lecture Theatre, Ben Pimlott Building,Warfare from Post-Fukushima Japan. Tuesday 10 February, 6-8pm, Goldsmiths

2.15pm: Dora Project Introduction by Françoise Dupré 3pm: Rebecca Snow, artist educator, discusses her short film made in response to her visit to Mittelbau-Dora Concentration Camp

3.20pm: Discussion between Gabrielle Decamous, Jenny Doussan, Françoise Dupré and Rebecca Snow 3.45pm: Break

4pm: Open debate around the suggested topics:

Memory: performing memory, witness as subject, memorials, testimonies, archives, local histories, WW2 history The image: the real and history, ethical dimension of aesthetics and (re)presentation of the unrepresentable, the commodification of the traumatic image Time-space: mutability of sites, layered topography through time and socio-political changes Ethics in science: science for war, space engineering contaminated by concentrationary universe

4.45pm: Closing remarks, Françoise Dupré and Jenny Doussan
